Making Music Accessible to All Deaf Children

Introduction

This project is an exploration of new ideas and approaches that we believe will contribute to science in understanding how we live. This proposal will further our scientific understanding of the possible role of music as a patterned system for those who live in the "Deaf World".

This research explores the relationship between music and physical and emotional wellness. The investigators propose to translate the elements of music from a sound state to a visual state. This translation process will take advantage of the visual nature of Deaf children making music accessible to all deaf children. The investigators will analyze the benefits of hands-on music-making in Deaf children

This project creates too a new accessible language to compare music and visual/color patterns in Deaf children. This new language is similar to a bilingual dictionary, in that both explain the vocabulary of each other. Hands-on music-making influences various mental functions including sound cognition and the skills of playing musical instruments.

The idea of this proposal is to create a process whereby Deaf children are able to see sound as the title suggests. This is more than simply viewing color translation of sound but includes the pattern recognition of the patterning of music.

Abstract

This project hopes to advance a more healthy and accessible social atmosphere for the Deaf both in their educational environment and in their personal lives. Finding an educational role for music as visual patterning may help us further understand the development of communication skills in the Deaf and support their integration with hearing society.

The study will be designed to proved Deaf students with alternative strategies to understand, and gain a greater appreciation for music.

We believe music education will enhance the school environment to be more enjoyable for them. This should open new vistas for the Deaf to understand sound and enjoy school life.

This project involves translating music into visual patterning for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The focus of this project is on analyzing the relationship between sound and the visual world, using musical and color elements. Designing a project that will help us understand the relationship between music and visual patterning in Deaf children may lead to a greater understanding of social behaviors of the Deaf in the school.

This project will have two major outcomes: a deeper appreciation of music by Deaf children through the patterns of light and visual elements that relate to musical score and furthering our understanding of positive effect on education life of Deaf students.

As an important result of this project, it is expected that using music as an educational tool for Deaf students will enhance communication between Deaf students and teachers, to strengthen cooperation between Deaf students and mainstream educators, to promote self-expression, to increase self-confidence, to provide a platform for the integration of the "Deaf World" with the "Hearing World", to support independence and to increase equal participation of the Deaf in society.
